for 495. once there it's smooth sailing all around town. let's take a live look first at university boulevard. lanes are open and you're good to go for your early morning commute. let's go back over to the maps this time inside the beltway heading north on 395 to the 14th street bridge. 295 to the 11th street bridge or 66 to the roosevelt bridge. everything inside the beltway is final. accident cleanup westbound on 66 after washington boulevard just blocking the right lane there. we'll take a live look at 14th street bridge. a good ride into the downtown area. i'll be back with more coming up in a few minutes at 5:09. mike and andrea? >> monika, see you then. the son. northern virginia congressman jim moran has resigned from his father's reelection effort. patrick moran has been a field director for the campaign in district 8. >> but then a secretly recorded video captured moran making comments about voter fraud. 9 news now reporter kristin fisher has more from our satellite center. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. this hidden camera footage was recorded right outside an arlington restaurant early this

month. it features an undercover investigator. that's who was taking this video. he's an investigator for a conservative watchdog groups that. -- that's called project -- [indiscernible] he approaches patrick moran with a plan to cast fraudulent ballots. at first patrick seems hesitant. listen closely. >> that's tough. i mean, like -- i feel like all the energy you're putting into it, i think it would be much better suited -- [ inaudible ] >> reporter: but the investigator pushes on and that's when the field director and son of an 11-term congressman finally gives some advice on how to pull off the deception at the polls. patrick never fully endorses the plan but he does tell the investigator to look into it.

[ inaudible ] >> reporter: yesterday after the video went viral, his father's campaign released a statement saying, quote, patrick is well liked and was a well respected member of the campaign team. this incident, however, was clearly an error in judgment. the campaign has accepted patrick's resignation effective immediately. yesterday we reached out to patrick for a comment. he responded last night via e- mail. i'll share it with you in half an hour at 5:30. andrea and mike? >> kristin fisher reporting live from our satellite center. doctors are now treating a bicyclist who suffered some life threatening injuries during a crash. a school bus collided with the cyclist yesterday on dearnstown -- in darnestown, maryland. route 28 was shut down in both directions for a little while. montgomery county police are

still investigating this. a prince william county judge is being urged to remove a special prosecutor in a murder for hire case. a federal appeals court upheld a lower court ruling overturning justin wolfe's 2002 conviction and death sentence in the slaying of his marijuana supplier. the court sided prosecutorial misconduct so those prosecutors relinquished the case to fairfax county's attorney. within a day the attorney announced he would retry the case. now 59 former judges and other attorneys have signed a letter saying he failed to conduct a meaningful independent review of that case. it is 5:04. it's time for the latest your money report. >> jessica doyle is here. another bad day on wall street. >> but at least we're seeing green arrows overseas. we're digging your selves out of a le. tough five sessions in a row with the dow now approaching a 500-point sell-off. stocks were down again

yesterday. that's even though we got strong earnings from companies like boeing and delta. checking the numbers for you, the dow stands at 13,077, slipped another 25 points in trading yesterday. nasdaq off by almost 9 and the s&p 500 was down by about four and a half. zinga stock will be one to watch today. the maker saw shares soar 14% in after hours trading. the social gaming company reported stronger than expected earnings and it plans to enter the gamblingbusiness. zynga will offer online poker and came seen know games played with real money in the uk. good looking? check. funny? check. thrifty? apparently more and more people don't mind going on a first date with someone who is frugal. in fact, they even like it. a survey by harris interactive for coupon cabin finds 26% of people say they'd have a positive reaction if their date used a coupon. 73% said it might lead to a second date. and more and more people are

good morning. almost 5:09 on this thursday morning. while we're quiet now, we're still watching sandy of course which could bring some big problems early next week in the form of wind and rain. not like the coast will see but we could still have our own issues. this morning the issues we have are clouds no moved in from the east. cloudy behind the capitol dome, although visibilities are still pretty good. we'll get into the middle of the day. still partly to mostly cloudy. 68 by lunch time. not as warm as yesterday. high of 73. by 6:00 p.m. a little more sunshine and 70. could be some drizzle and fog returning late tonight. i'll be back in just a few minutes with the seven-day forecast and of course the latest on sandy. right now here's monika with timesaver traffic. on the inbound side of i-66 things are still looking good if centreville to here at nutley street and beyond to the beltway. westbound 66 inside 495 accident cleanup after washington boulevard. i'll be back with more traffic coming up at 5:17.

mike? >> thanks, monika. here's what's making news at 5:10. police are looking for a gunman who opened fire at a business and home in california. three of the five people who were hit have since died. police believe the victims are all related and believe the gunman targeted the victims but investigators aren't releasing a motive just yet. the family of a louisiana woman who claim three men set her on and scrawled racial slurs on her car is apologizing. the woman set herself on fire and made up the story about being attacked. she is still hospitalized in critical condition. hurricane sandy has crossed over cuba and has just left jamaica and his pan yol la. residents fear flash flooding. they moved too higher ground. large numbers of trees and power lines have been knocked down and the storm has been blamed for at least two deaths. a lot of voters around here will have several questions to

take a live look outside of the u.s. capitol. temperatures in the 50s and 60s depending where you're waking up this morning. definitely balmy and we're talking the end of october. >> a little too balmy. yesterday we tied the record of 84. the way the atmosphere is set up, normally you get tropical storms -- tropical systems in october, it's not newark. -- not unusual. it's unusual that they come up the coast. we'll be tracking sandy for you around the clock. if you'd like to check it out yourself on your iphone or android device or ipad, you can text sandy to 25543 and download our wusa weather app. aim going to start with sand -- i'm going to start with sandy. color enhanced the coldest cloud tops so you can see the taller storms that are wrapping around the center a little bit better as sandy is just about off shore, at least the eye of sandy just about off shore from the northern cuba coast.

look at the eye. actually had category 3 winds at 115 miles per hour. eight weaken todz 105 -- it's weakened to 105. the pressure has come up to 960. this is a big storm tracking toward the central and northern bahamas as we go throughout the day and nighttime hours. as we get toward saturday morning, the hurricane center has it parallelling the coast here as we get through the weekend. there's going to be a lot of surf on the carolina coast this weekend and the wind field will expand greatly on this. the advisory by tuesday morning 5:00 a.m. still has the storm at 70 mile an hour winds south along long island, east of us. you will see something here. i want to show you the forecast model. they have a lot of different solutions. a tight consens through the bahamas. then they start this turn. watch what happens as we get into the period later sunday

into monday and tuesday. some of them are going this way but what has me concerned are the ones that are coming towards the coast making the left turn. if this were to happen, let's say this happens, and this is not in concrete. if this model has got it, delaware bay will be pounded. southern new jersey is going to be pounded. there will be tremendous flooding. even wilmington, delaware, philadelphia potentially as it comes up the bay. for us we would see rain and wind. not as bad as the coast but clearly tremendous wind and rainstorm. maybe enough cold air for snow in the mountains. this is why the hype for sandy has begun because this could be an epic storm. mostly loudy this morning, 50s and 60s -- cloudy this morning, 50s and 60s. if it goes out to sea, that's the best answer. aim with you on that one. day planner 63 by 9:00. 68 by noon. temperatures in the mid-50s in reston although fairfax is 60. ashburn is 61. it's 59 at great falls. college park this morning 62.

you can see some of the low clouds that have been coming in behind the capitol over the last few hours. we've got 62 and an east, northeast wind at 5 bringing in the moisture off the atlantic. just want to point out there's a lot of cold air in the more than part of the country. see the rain and snow in the plains? as that cold air comes in with the warm waters in the atlantic, that will help turn whatever sandy is into a big storm, a nontropical but big storm with a large wind field. 73 today. tonight we're in the 50s. tomorrow 71. could be some early drizzle and fog on friday. saturday just an isolated shower. i think saturday is not too bad, upper 60s. late sunday some moisture from sandy could be here, 60. then cool and potentially wet and windy early next week. 5:17. here comes monika with timesaver traffic. single vehicle, a deadly accident overnight is being investigated and reconstructed in annandale on backlick road at john mar drive. be aware of that inside the beltway. 270 looks great. no problems out of gaithersburg into rockville and bethesda.

across cuba about to emerge off the northeast cuba coast heading to the central and northern bahamas. potentially could be a problem around here as we get into the latter part of the week. more likely monday and tuesday. this is kind after cool picture from our tower cam looking southwest. we've seen the low clouds moving in from left to right here. we're looking south. so it's coming in from the southeast this morning. visibilities low a little bit. this afternoon low 70s. south and west with enough sunshine you could get 75, 76. i think 73 in d.c. with a 5:00 p.m. temperature 672 -- temperature 72. big ridge right now. that will be giving way to a cold front coming in from the west bringing colder air and potentially moisture from sandy, wind and rain early next week. leesburg is 60. 60 in la plata. a warm spot right now annapolis at 64. here comes monika samtani 5:29, time saferrer traffic. -- time saferrer traffic --

early voting under way, the candidates have often tried to hit several swing states each day. but today the republican challenger is going to narrow his focus to ohio. several stops in that state. >> ohio could well be the place that elects the next president of the united states. >> we are pulling an all nighter. no sleep. and if you're not going to sleep, you might as well be in vegas. >> the president also appeared on the tonight show with jay leno as part after blitz across six states on his tour. today one of the president's stops will be in chicago where he will cast his ballot. locally a shake-up in the campaign of long-term congressman jim moran. his son pat has resigned over what ef said in a secretly -- what he said in a secretly recorded video. kristin fisher is in our satellite center with more. who recorded this, kristin? >> reporter: it's very interesting. this video shows patrick moran giving advice to an undercover investigator about how to

commit voter fraud. this undercover investigator works for a conservative watchdog group and solicited the advice. there's a big question this morning of was this just a blatant setup or was it proof of dishonest politics? we're going to let you be the judge this morning. here is the back story. patrick moran is the son of the 11-term congressman from northern virginia jim moran. patrick has been working as a field director in his father's reelection campaign when this video was recorded right outside a restaurant in arlington on october 8. in the video, the undercover investigator is disguised as a democratic supporter and approaches patrick with a plan to cast fraudulent ballots. at first patrick is hesitant. he tries to encourage the investigator to lobby for the votes legally instead but then he seems to give in and even offer advice on how to pull it off. listen.

>> you can see the back and forth there. we reached out to patrick for a comment. he responded yesterday via e- mail saying, quote, at no point have i or will i ever endorse any sort of illegal or unethical behavior. at no point did i take this person seriously. he was acting crazy and it struck me that he was joking and for only that reason did i humor him. in retrospect, i should just have walked away making the point there is no police in the electoral process for even the suggestion of illegal behavior, joking or not. he said he didn't want to be a distraction with only two weeks to go before election day. probably a good call. >> yes, not be any more of a

distraction than he already s. kristin fisher will have more on the story for out in our newscast. supporters and opponents of the same-sex marriage referendum are planning to rally at gallaudet university here in the district but they're both planning to call for the same thing. both groups want dr. angela mccaskill reinstated at the school's chief diverse if i officer. -- diversity officer. she was placed on paid leave after it was learned she sign add petition to get the referendum on the maryland ballot. she says she's not anti-gay but thinks voters should decide if same-sex marriage should be legal or not. election officials have installed a voter registration and absentee ballot drop box in montgomery county. it's located outside the board of elections headquarters in the 18700 block of route 355 in gaithersburg. montgomery county voters can now drop off completed registration applications or ballots 24 hours a day 7 days a week. the five early voting centers in montgomery county will be open this saturday. coming up on 5:35.

jessica doyle is watching your money. >> indeed. colleges want a lot of it to educate your kids. >> oh, yeah. it used to be in a college charged $50,000 a year, we'd be talking about it on the news. that would be making headlines. turns out that is getting to be old hat. the college board reports $15 -- reports 151 colleges are now charging 50 grand or more in tuition fees. room and boards for the 2012- 2013 year, that's up from 58 schools back in 2009. sarah lawrence college now charging over $61,000. that's what's making headlines nowadays. more signs the housing market continues to recover. foreclosures are down in 62% of the nation's largest cities. we're talking tan fran, detroit, loss -- san francisco, detroit, los angeles, san diego all seeing foreclosures fall by a quarter or more. keep this in the back of your mind the next time you go to see your doctor. a woman claims she was charged extra at her doctor's office because she asked too many

questions. the minnesota woman was charged an extra $50 at her annual visit because she brought a list of a few questions with her. medical services are carefully coded for insurance purposes and the insurance company may require the patient pay or make a co-pay for services that range beyond the prevebtstive -- preventive part of that appointment. that means if you just have general questions, your doctor could code it and charge you extra for it. >> you won't know that unless you read the -- oh, wow. not fair. >> i don't like it. >> i don't either. you've got even more for us in the next hour. >> i do. a hot new business is coming to washington, d.c. ladies, no excuses for bad hair days anymore. these blowouts are a lot cheaper than some of the competition. we're going to give it a test drive coming up. >> very cool. >> mike loves this story. >> i have a funny joke about it i'll share with you later. the bidens came to the

download our wusa weather app. but i'm going to track it for you right now with a look at the satellite imagery. we color enhanced the cloud tops to show you the colder, darker cloud tops. makes it easier to see where the thunderstorms are cranking around the center. you saw it earlier it jamaica and cuba, the tall, tall dark colors, powerful thunderstorms wrapping around the center as this got to a category 3 briefly. you can see it's emerged on the north shore. there's the eye headed up toward the central and northern bahamas over the next 24 to 36 hours. winds at 105 gusting to 130. pressure at 960 which is up just a little bit but still a powerful storm. watch the track here from the hurricane center as we go in towards friday now. a little jog to the northwest and then back to the northeast by saturday morning. weakening to a category 1 storm with winds of 80 miles an hour. we'll see 90 friday morning. 80 saturday morning. then it's going to parallel the coast and then start to make

another turn toward the north potentially the northwest at some point back toward the east coast. right now hurricane center has it well off shore the center but the cone does start to brush against the delmarva. when i look at some of the modeling, it gets me a little anxious, not so much in the short term. we think this is solid through the bahamas but watch the coast. watch what happens. some of the models are going out to sea. we'd love that to happen but when you start to see two or three of them moving off toward the west, we've got one toward eastern long island. another one trying to get there not as quickly. then this model coming right in toward maybe ocean city with a big turn up the dell ware bay would be some -- delaware bay would be some massive flooding were that to occur. we'll have to carefully watch sandy and see which scenario plays out. the weather service will launch extra weather balloons every six hours instead of every 12 for the next couple of days so we get better data on this. mostly cloudy this morning, 50s and 60s. sunrise 7:28 at the bus stop. today we'll start out with the

clouds, get some sunshine this afternoon. that will keep us in the low 70s with an east wind at 5 to 10 miles an hour. this morning we've got low to mid-50s out west while we're still 62 in d.c. 61 easton and 57 for our friends in hagueerstown. looking at this michael & son weather camera, you can see how the low clouds have really come n. visibilities reduced a bit. not having the fog but we're a little bit on the downward visibility. temps 62. east, northeast winds at 5. big storm out in the west. the cold air, the snow is out on the plains this morning. rains out ahead of it. warm out ahead of it. and with the cold coming in now and warm waters in the atlantic, that will also be another ingredient to fuel a major storm to develop from sandy into an extra tropical storm. 73 today. tonight we're dipping into the 50s. some late drizzle or fog possible. tomorrow becoming partly sunny in the afternoon after the morning clouds, 71. saturday could be an isolated shower with that front late, 58. i still think a good day. sunday rain develops, 60.

monday and tuesday just depends on sandy but definitely colder. monika? if you're planning to head northbound on 95, you'll want to know that there's an accident now right after route 610 aquia harbor and it is blocking the left lane. you see ought the orange forming. i would say at best you're going 39 miles an hour, maybe less as you head to the accident scene. you need to stay to the right to get around it. let's take a live look further up if you're planning to head here at backlick road in newington. this is fine heading to springfield and 395. we'll go back over to our maps. things have been good on 66 coming in from manassas to centreville. i'm going to step out and show what you it looks like live from our paul here in annandale where an accident investigation and reconstruction has been going on since about 2:30 this morning on backlick road at john mar drive. you can see with the tape up the road is blocked off. go ahead and use an alternate route. route 236 or jay hawk street will work just fine. we'll have more on this and 95 accident coming up in my next

report at 6:00. andrea? >> thank you, monika. making news now coming up on 5:51, a couple of small colorado towns remain evacuated as crews try to get a handle on a wind fueled wildfire. the blaze has destroyed at least 14 homes and scorched more than three square miles. authorities announced overnight that the fire is only 15% contained. in hawaii lava is refilling two craters of the volcano. the pools are getting much bigger. they'll be visible from an observation deck. you can also hear the rumbling as the lava melts to the solid earth around it. i had the pleasure of being at this event last night. vice president joe biden hosted a reception for breast cancer survivors and advocates at the naval center. his wife dr. joe biden has been involved in breast cancer awareness activities for nearly 20 years. the vice president told his audience that sharing their
